It has seen many different spellings over time. They range from Gauhati, Gohati, Gawhati to Guhati although phonetically Guwahati (the current Anglicised spelling) is the nearest match to its roots in the Axomiya (Assamese) language. It has also found a name as the leading light of the north east in Pragjyotishpur. It is a very beautiful place and has the majestic Kamakhya Mandir overlooking the curves in the river acting as a sentinel.
